Auminium Blue Oiled Metalier finish

There is a phrase we use rather a lot at Metalier:

“It looks better in real life.”

Normally that sounds suspiciously like an excuse for a bad photograph.

With metal, it is often simply true.

A photograph can show the colour of a finish. It can show texture and pattern. A very good photograph can even capture some of the movement of light across the surface.

But it can only show one moment, from one angle, in one light.

Real metal does rather more than that.

A metal finish changes as you move

One of the things that makes metal so interesting is the way it responds to light.

Turn a sample slightly and a surface that looked quiet can suddenly become luminous. Move from daylight to artificial light and the colour can appear warmer or cooler. Texture that seems subtle from one direction becomes much more obvious from another.

That is why choosing a metal finish from a screen alone can be difficult.

You are looking at a representation of the material rather than the material itself.

Our Blue-Oiled Aluminium is a particularly good example. Its colour is striking in a photograph, but what a photograph cannot properly convey is the way the surface changes as the light moves across it.

A sample tells you more than colour

A physical sample lets you do something a screen cannot.

You can pick it up.

You can turn it towards the light.

You can put it beside timber, stone, fabric or another metal and see how the materials behave together.

You can take it to the actual room and see what happens under the lighting that will ultimately surround it.

That matters because specifying metal is about much more than choosing a colour.

It is about surface, texture, reflectivity and light.

From sample to architecture

And then something else happens when the finish moves from a sample into a project.

Scale changes it.

Blue front door finished in Metalier

On a small sample, Blue-Oiled Aluminium is a beautiful finish.

Across an entire front door, it becomes architecture.

The larger surface gives the light room to move. Surrounding materials affect how the colour is perceived. The finish becomes part of the building rather than an isolated piece of metal.

That is one of the reasons we always like designers to see physical finishes wherever possible.

The sample is the beginning of the conversation – not the end of it.

Scale, shape and surroundings all matter

The same is true at the warmer end of the metal spectrum.

Patinated Brass Windsor Metalier Finish

A brass finish can look quite restrained when viewed as a sample.

Give it a larger surface, introduce curves, lighting and neighbouring materials, and it can behave very differently.

Hotel Naumi naquettes with Metalier Brass Windsor finish

The brass finish on the banquettes at Hotel Naumi is a lovely example.

Here the metal is no longer being considered in isolation. It is working with upholstery, shape, shadow and the lighting of the room.

That is when a finish really comes alive.

Digital discovery still has an important job

None of this means digital images are unimportant.

Quite the opposite.

Websites, project galleries and digital material libraries allow designers to discover finishes, compare possibilities and create a shortlist long before a physical sample is needed.

They are enormously useful at the beginning of the process.

But when a finish becomes a serious contender for a project, there is still no substitute for seeing the real thing.

Particularly when the material itself is real metal.

Start on screen. Decide with the material.

Perhaps that is the simplest way to put it.

Use photographs for inspiration.

Use digital libraries to discover what is possible.

Use project images to understand scale and context.

But when the decision matters, put the sample in your hand and see what the light does to it.

Because with metal, what you see on screen is only part of the story.
