The Metalier Decorative Liquid Metal System

01 Overview

So, what is Metalier? It is an imaginative and artistic decorative liquid metal finishes system suitable for interior and exterior applications. But don’t just take our word for it.

LPF Group said of their office fitout said “The end product created by Metalier was profound.”

Metalier coatings are a cold decorative liquid metal finishes system that can be sprayed, rolled, trowelled, or brushed. Metalier can make any substrate, even mundane ones like MDF, look as though they are made of solid metal.

There are two main components of the system: first are the metals in powder form, and second, the liquid, or binder. There are extras as well, and we’ll get to those.

02 The components: metals

What sets Metalier metals on a pedestal is that they are encapsulated in a unique coating that significantly slows oxidation. We don’t know of any other company that offers this protection for its metals. In addition, Metalier metals are packed in 1 kg vacuum bags, giving another layer of protection.

The trend with other companies is to increase the number of metals offered. We are reducing ours but increasing the colour options available to our distributors, applicators, and happy end-users. We do this by mixing metals and creatively using patinas. You’ll learn all about this when you become a member of the Metalier Team.

03 Water-based Binder at the Heart of Our Decorative Liquid Metal Finishes

Metalier’s primary binder and our “go-to choice” is our water-based binder at the heart of our decorative liquid metal finishes WBMC – which are the initials of Water Based Metal Coat. It’s called Metal Coat because it is the liquid that conveys the metal. There are other liquids, and we don’t want you putting the metal powders into the wrong material! WBMC now incorporates the flexibility that was originally in our Flexible Binder. Now you get two possibilities with one product.

We also offer a solvent Metal Coat. It’s the traditional binder that most companies work with. We’re keeping it as an option for now until we persuade and cajole all our applicators to join the water-based revolution. Unlike the solvent, the water-based system doesn’t smell, it is easier to spray and finish, it has a longer pot life, and you clean up in water, not acetone. What’s not to like – and with very low to zero VOCs, it is a no-brainer.

The water-based system is great for the end-user too. There is no potential for long-term emissions of VOCs. It also means that on-site applications are not only possible, they are actively encouraged.

04 The components: extras

What you see with a Metalier finish is its most important ingredient, metal. It’s up to 95% pure metal when finished. But other things are vital parts of the process. First is the Metalier primer. It ensures that the coating gets a great bond with the substrate. For smooth water-based finishes, you’ll want to add Flow Agent. Flow Agent acts as a Hot Weather Retardant too. It also means that the metal coat containing the metal deposits evenly on the substrate without orange peel. This ensures a speedy sanding process with a minimised risk of costly cut-throughs.

Metalier Thickener will be required for most textured finishes, and one of our patinas will age and antique your finish and take it to the next level. Finally, you’ll want to protect the finish from damage and oxidation – and that’s change to clear coat comes in. Our water-based clear coat is second to none in performance, durability, re; reliability and beauty.

We are currently ensuring that all our distributors become one-stop shops for all your Metalier requirements – the material, of course, plus tooling and abrasives. Hint hint – some amazing things are coming down the pipeline.

05 Smooth, textured and patinated finishes

Smooth, textured and patinated finishes are all possible with Metalier coatings. The new formulations of the water-based coatings allow for easier application of all types of finishes. Follow the instructions for laying down a smooth finish and applicators will be astonished at how quickly a smooth and polished finish can be created with minimal sanding. Textures are also possible using our special thickening agent designed especially for the water-based system.

Patina – sometimes we love it and sometimes we hate it. It has a mind of its own and is very temperamental. But we wouldn’t be without it. Some of the most wonderful finishes in the Signature Finishes Collection are created using patina. When it is at its most beautiful, it is modern alchemy.
